Marketplace Platforms
Two-sided platforms that connect buyers and sellers — built for the complexity of running both sides of a market.

What Is a Marketplace Platform?
A marketplace platform connects two groups — buyers and sellers, taskers and task-posters, brands and retailers, employers and workers — and manages everything that happens between them. That sounds straightforward. In practice, it's one of the more demanding products to build well.
You're not building one product, you're building two. Each side of the market has different needs, different flows, and different reasons to stay. Add payment handling, commission logic, reviews, search and matching, dispute resolution, and the admin tooling to run it all — and a marketplace is a significant system before you've acquired a single user.
Sentia has been building marketplace platforms since the early days of the category. We built Airtasker from its startup origins — Australia's largest services marketplace. We've since built platforms spanning property, out-of-home advertising, staffing, and retail trade. That experience shapes how we approach every marketplace build.
Why Marketplace Platforms?
The risk with marketplaces isn't usually the technology. It's designing something that only works for one side, building payment logic that breaks at scale, or shipping without the trust signals that convince strangers to transact.
Experienced marketplace builders know what goes wrong — and design around it before it does.
You might need this if:
- You're connecting two distinct user groups and need to manage the relationship between them
- You need payment handling, commission logic, or escrow built into the platform
- Your platform requires search, filtering, or matching that goes beyond a basic list
- You need reviews, verification, or trust signals built in — not added later
- You need admin and moderation tooling to manage what happens on the platform at scale
How We Build Marketplace Platforms?
Design both sides before building anything A marketplace has two distinct user experiences — and the needs of each side often pull in opposite directions. We define what success looks like for buyers and sellers separately before designing how they interact, so the platform serves both without compromising either.
Build payment and commission logic correctly from the start Payment flows in marketplaces — splits, commissions, escrow, refunds, disputes — are genuinely complex. Getting this wrong is expensive to fix. We design and implement payment architecture from day one, not as an afterthought when the platform is already live.
Design for trust Strangers don't transact on a platform they don't trust. Reviews, identity verification, dispute resolution, and transparent track records aren't features you add in version two — they're what makes the marketplace work. We build trust mechanisms into the platform from the ground up.
Build admin and moderation tools alongside the user product The team running the marketplace needs tools too. Moderation queues, flagging workflows, user management, financial reporting — these get built alongside the user-facing product, not as an internal backlog that never gets prioritised.
Plan for the cold start Every marketplace has a chicken-and-egg problem at launch. We think through the supply-demand sequencing early — which side to seed first, how to make the platform useful before network effects kick in — so the growth plan is part of the product, not separate from it.
Key Benefits
Benefit 1: Built by a team that has done it before Sentia has built marketplace platforms from startup to scale — including Airtasker, now Australia's largest services marketplace. The patterns, the failure modes, and the decisions that look minor but aren't are familiar territory.
Benefit 2: Both sides treated as first-class users Marketplace platforms fail when one side of the market is an afterthought. We design and test for both buyer and seller experiences from the start — because a platform that doesn't work for both sides doesn't work.
Benefit 3: Payment complexity handled Commission splits, escrow, refund logic, payout schedules — marketplace payment flows are more complex than standard e-commerce. We've built these systems before and know what to get right before go-live.
Benefit 4: Designed to be managed, not just launched A marketplace is a product you run, not just one you ship. The admin tooling, moderation workflows, and operational dashboards that make day-to-day management possible are part of what we build — not left for later.
